ELKHART — Delmar DeForrest Went Sr., 92, of Elkhart, died at 1:41 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, at Hubbard Hill Estates.
Delmar was born July 22, 1920, in Elkhart to William O. and Rosa Ella (Grunwalt) Went.
He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Jean (Larry) Geerts of Elkhart; a son, Delmar (B.J.) Went Jr. of Elkhart; a stepdaughter, Patti Showalter of Elkhart; a stepson, Gary (Janell) O’Dell of Middlebury; a sister, Joyce (Bill) Darlington of Texas; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepgranddaughter; a step-great-great-grandson; two sisters, Maxine Kunkle and Juanita Vargo; and three brothers, John Paul Sr., Chedrick “Chet” and Max Went.
Delmar worked at C.G. Conn for 35 years and was owner/operator of VerDel Drapery for 12 years.
He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1939.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
He was a life member of Goshen Moose, a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge George Washington 325 Bristol and Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, a member of American Legion Post 143 in Bristol, DAV Post 19 in Elkhart, VFW Post 985 in Goshen, Order of the Eastern Star and Bristol United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
