GOSHEN— An Elkhart woman who pleaded guilty to dealing in methamphetamine was sentenced Thursday morning in the Elkhart County Circuit Court.

Amanda James, 23, of 54305 Silver St., Elkhart, was sentenced to five years in prison and five years on probation. She pleaded guilty on Nov. 15, 2012, to dealing in methamphetamine, a Class B felony, and maintaining a common nuisance, a Class D felony. James had agreed to no more than 12 years in prison.

Clifford Williams, James’ attorney, said James has had “a rocky life.” With several issues ongoing in her family. He added one of Amanda’s children was recently diagnosed with an illness.

WIlliams also said James has changed in various ways since she was first booked at the Elkhart County Jail. Her physique has improved, as well as her communication and attitude.

However, deputy prosecutor David Francisco was not very optimistic about her changes.

“I expect her to be back in this courtroom during probation,” he said. “I hope not. But if I do see her back I expect to send her back to the Department of Correction for the remainder of her sentence.”

Amanda and Coty James were arrested Aug. 2 and charged with dealing in meth by manufacturing it and maintaining a common nuisance. Coty James was also charged with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.

Coty James was sentenced on Dec. 13 to eight years in prison and four on probation.
