Elkhart County Symphony hosting annual student competition Sunday in Elkhart

ELKHART — The Elkhart County Symphony will hold the 27th annual Student Concerto Competition at 2 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Beardsley St.

Nine students will compete for cash awards and the opportunity to perform with the Elkhart County Symphony in a concert, “A Taste of the Tropics,” which plays at 4 p.m. March 3 in the Lerner Theater. The students are Concord High School’s Abigail Alwine, playing the viola; John Adams’ High School’s Anton Gillespie, playing the French horn; Goshen’s Alexis Barton (violin), Sadie Gustafson-Zook (viola), Sean Weber (trombone), Ben Wiebe (cello); Peter Paetkau (violin) and Carol Weirich (piano); and St. Joseph’s High School’s Liam Mahrer (violin).

The competition is open to students through grade 12 who play string, woodwind, brass, percussion or the piano. Entrants must be residents of Elkhart County, attend school or participate in musical activities such as YHO in Elkhart County, or have a private music teacher who lives or works in Elkhart County.
