The decision was announced Wednesday through a press release from the company that also noted the move will include Thor’s corporate human resources, finance and accounting, legal and information technology departments.
Thor’s move is an important symbolic decision for the company, who have had chief officers in the area for a while.
“Given our commitment to the RV industry, we want to be more accessible and active in the community where a large majority of RVs are produced and where more than 70 percent of our operations are located,” said Peter Orthwein, Thor chairman and chief executive officer. “With so many of Thor’s operations located in Elkhart and neighboring LaGrange counties, it makes sense to have our corporate management and support services as close to as many of our operating subsidiaries as possible.”
The company’s subsidiaries, which include Dutchmen, Four Winds and Damon and Breckenridge, combined make Thor the largest manufacturer of RVs in the world. Thor also has manufacturers of ambulances and commercial buses.
President and chief operating officer Bob Martin already lives in Elkhart County and applauded the decision to move the headquarters.
“I am very pleased that we will have our corporate headquarters in the community that my family and I, and so many members of our team, call home,” Martin said in the release.
“This new location will not only bring Thor closer to many of our subsidiaries, but we will also be closer to most of our suppliers. When we think about how important relationships are to our business, it’s clear that Elkhart is the right place for us to be,” he added.
“The Thor family of companies represent the nation’s largest manufacturer of RVs and a major producer of buses and ambulances, and we’re delighted to have them in Elkhart,” said Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore in the release. “Their presence in the downtown area will bring more investors and corporate activity to our economy, which is great for everyone.”
