12:20 P.M. UPDATE:

Roy Marchant of Elkhart, the passenger on the airplane, downplayed the incident.

“It's slow motion. It's not all that scary, I guess,” Marchant said. “I wouldn't call it a serious accident.”

Marchant said he and the pilot were just taking a routine flight to check out the aircraft. As they were landing, the pilot lost control as the plane got too close to the edge of the runway, possibly hitting grass or snow and then flipping. Marchant described the pilot as experienced.

The pilot's identity was not immediately available.

The most complicated thing about the incident was taking off his seat belt, said Marchant, because he was hanging upside down.

ORIGINAL STORY:

ELKHART — Two people walked away from the crash of a single-engine propeller plane at the Mishawaka Pilots Club Airport on C.R. 20 west of the city.

Emergency responders were sorting out the details of the crash, which happened around 11:30 a.m.

Chad Carey, chief of the Baugo Township Fire Department, said there were two men in the airplane. They both were “OK,” Carey said, and did not need to be hospitalized. Carey said he didn't know how the crash happened.

The plane could be seen on its top just off the runway at the airport.

Officers with the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department were also investigating.
