A Middlebury woman died 10 days after being involved in a one-car accident.

Shirley Grace, 60, died Sunday at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Authorities believe Grace died from complications related to the auto accident, which happened on Dec. 21 when the car she was driving left the road and struck a utility pole along C.R. 35 near C.R. 20 southwest of Middlebury.

According to an initial report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Grace suffered a cut to the forehead and pain to the neck, back and left knee.

However, a spokesman for the Allen County Coroner indicated she sustained a serious back injury.

While the coroner’s office suspects Grace died from complications due to injuries from the accident, a final autopsy report will not be available for a few more weeks, the spokesman said.

She was taken to IU Health Goshen Hospital and later transferred to Parkview Hospital.
