ELKHART — Elkhart Literacy Project leaders hoped to have 30 volunteers to work with adult reading students by June, but already have 40 signed up.

The Learning Generation Initiative and Elkhart Community Schools’ adult and community education department together with a grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation began offering adult literacy classes this past fall and issued a call for local volunteers to work one-on-one with the students.

After an article ran earlier this month in The Elkhart Truth, Kathy Royer, executive director of the Learning Generation Initiative, said that they had 40 volunteers signed up for a volunteer training in early January. She had been hoping for 10 people to sign up for that training, she said. Because of the turn out, organizers will move the training from a Learning Generation Initiative classroom to a space at Prairie Street Mennonite Church.

A number of adults have also called staff in the weeks since the article ran asking about how to enroll in the literacy classes.

Royer said that they should soon have matches made between students and volunteers.
