NAPPANEE — A 51-year-old Amish man and his 4-year-old daughter were seriously injured Friday night when the buggy they were riding in was hit by a car, according to a report on television station WNDU’s website.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. in the 5400 block of West County Road 1350 North.

Police said Arlen Lehman of Milford was trying to stop his horse-drawn buggy from entering the roadway from a private driveway when it trotted into the path of an oncoming car, WNDU reported.

The driver of the car, 23-year-old Jodi Kauffman of Etna Green, told police she slammed on her brakes but her car slid into the side of the carriage, causing it to roll onto its side.

Lehman and his daughter, Renae, were flown to a local hospital. Lehman’s wife and two other children were also inside the buggy at the time, but weren’t hurt, according to WNDU.

The crash remains under investigation.
