I, along with millions of others, looked forward to NRA spokesman Wayne LaPierre’s Friday news conference. Just maybe the NRA would finally agree to a sensible reassessment of gun violence in our society. I agree with one of LaPierre’s main talking points: That we identify and get help for the mentally disturbed in our society.

After LaPierre’s Friday news conference, and the appearance of NRA leaders on many Sunday talk shows, I had to wonder where real illness exists. The kind of insane, irresponsible remedy put forth by them should be an embarrassment to every reasonable, responsible NRA member. The kind of nonsense proposed is like fighting fire with gasoline. As someone commented: It’s like telling someone with lung cancer that the best thing they can do is smoke more.
