People’s Forum: Is sheriff aware of group’s intentions?
Posted: 12/27/2012 at 1:15 am

In a recent interview with your reporter, Sheriff Rogers divulged his membership in the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA) and its council (“Elkhart County sheriff warns: The feds sometimes overstep their bounds,” Dec. 17 Elkhart Truth). He was mentioned in an article in the winter issue of a publication of the Southern Poverty Law Center, the group that shut down the Klan in a lawsuit dramatically recounted in the biography of Morris Dees, the SPLC’s iconic founder.

The article explores the background of the founder of CSPOA, Richard Mack, whose job application with the FBI was rejected, probably because he was already “over the top.” I hope our sheriff has fully informed himself about this group, which stands for lawlessness and vigilantism, according to Daniel Levitas, the author of “The Terrorist next Door,” a study of the racist underpinnings of the militia movement of the 1990s.
