116 traffic accidents in Elkhart Co. Wednesday; 6 so far today

ELKHART — Elkhart County motorists have apparently adjusted to the icy cold conditions.

Accident calls and reports spiked Wednesday as Elkhart County experienced its first big snowfall of the season. Between 8 a.m. and midnight alone on Wednesday, Elkhart County dispatchers received 82 calls related to accidents or auto slide-offs while Elkhart police on Wednesday reported 34 calls late Wednesday morning and Wednesday afternoon.

By contrast, between 4 a.m. and around 11 a.m. this morning, Thursday, the Elkhart County 911 center had received just six accident calls, said Todd Anderson, assistant director of the Elkhart County dispatch center. Elkhart city dispatchers reported no accident calls this morning.

After the first big snowfall here, accidents typically spike as motorists adjust to the slick conditions. Typically crashes level off after that, though Anderson said rain and snow together can be a potent mix whatever part of the season.

The National Weather Service forecast for today, Dec. 27, calls for mostly cloudy conditions in the Elkhart area and a high of just 30 degrees. There’s a 20 to 40 percent chance of snow on Friday extending into Saturday with partly sunny conditions on Sunday. Bundle up because temperatures will max out only in the low 30s over the weekend.
