NAPPANEE — There will be another chance for the community to help the family of David Borkholder, the Nappanee farmer who was injured in an accident last July, at a benefit supper and auction Friday.

Borkholder remains at Elkhart General Hospital after suffering a severe injury while operating a haybine July 4. Since that time, the family’s medical bills have increased dramatically, creating a financial burden for the uninsured family.

Friday’s event is expected to be attended by 3,000 to 4,000 people, said Gerald Beechy, owner of Dutch Village Market, where the benefit is to be held. Beechy, a friend of the Borkholder family, is donating the use of his building for the event at no cost.

The event will begin at noon with a meal of hamburgers, tenderloin sandwiches, chicken strips, french fries, chicken noodles and more, as well as a bake sale.

After the meal is concluded, an auction is set to begin at 2 p.m.

Beechy said all the items to be auctioned off are donated. The auction will feature everything from furniture and shop and garden tools to farm items, grills and quilts, among other things.

Tickets will also be sold at the auction for a chance to win men’s and women’s Fuji double-wall-wheel bikes and a large Green Egg grill with cabinet.

The auction is the most recent benefit for the Borkholder family. A 5K run and walk was held last month to help the family purchase mattresses, shoes, winter clothing and other assorted items.
