Police have responded to about 60 accidents this morning, Dec. 11, after a night of snow made road conditions dangerous for commuters.

Todd Anderson, assistant director of the 911 Communication Center of Elkhart County, said there have been roughly 58 accidents since 4:30 a.m. this morning throughout Elkhart County. About seven of those accidents had personal injuries.

According to Elkhart City Dispatch, there have been about three of four in the city. None of the accidents in the city have had personal injuries.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is asking drivers to avoid the U.S. 20 Bypass because of road conditions.

Lt. Travis Adamson, public information officer at the Sheriff’s Department, said in a press release deputies responded to numerous crashes this morning at the U.S. 20 bypass. According to Adamson, police responded to three separate accidents that involved 20 vehicle in one location on the eastbound lane, just a mile west of S.R. 19. Of those accidents, one person was transported to the hospital. Their condition is unknown at the time. Three other people received minor injuries from the accident, but were not transported.

On C.R. 17, police and Jefferson Township EMS responded to a three-vehicle accident between Beck Drive and Hoffman St. around 7:28 a.m.

A vehicle going south and one going north on C.R. 17 collided head-on and a third vehicle was hit as well, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officer at the scene. One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Northbound traffic was stopped for almost an hour.
