Overnight snowfall of about an inch in Elkhart County is causing a slick morning commute.

Lt. Travis Adamson said in an email, “Elkhart County has received numerous reports of traffic crashes throughout the county. Please avoid the U.S. 20 Bypass this morning and parts of it are being closed at this time.”

The National Weather Service office in North Webster reported that the snow breaks the longest consecutive streak of days without measurable snowfall in South Bend. The .3 inches of snow Monday were the first since March 5. The 279-day span broke the 1948 record of 272 days.

Adamson said, “We are urging motorists to use extreme caution and to reduce speed on the roadway. Please give yourself extra time to get to your destination due to the icy road conditions.”
