MIDDLEBURY — A driver was not injured Thursday afternoon after crashing into the side of Das Dutchman Essenhaus restaurant on U.S. 20.

According to Jeff Miller, operations manager for the Essenhaus, an elderly woman ran into the side of the building, knocking in part of the wall near the gift shop.

“I heard this unbelievable crash,” said owner Bob Miller. “It sounded like a bomb,” Jeff Miller added.

Jeff Miller said he didn’t believe the crash was the result of intoxication. “I thought it was a mistake,” he said.

He said a contractor would be coming to the restaurant to assess the damages, but they did not know at the time how much it would cost or how long it would take to repair the damage.

Jeff Miller went on to add that the damage will not inhibit the rest of the building from doing business as usual.
