ELKHART — A fire that started last night in a retail store restroom did not cause any major damage, but the fire department is treating it as arson.

The Elkhart Fire Department responded around 8:48 p.m. to Big Lots at 138 W. Hively Ave., Elkhart, to find a trash can that had been lit on fire inside a public restroom.

A store employee who asked not to be identified said the sprinklers went off after detecting the smoke, and there was no major damage.

The store was closed for about an hour, but reopened later to continue its regular hours.

According to the report in the Elkhart Police Department’s blotter, the estimated damage ran between $250 and $5,000.
