ELKHART — Less than a week after a shooting outside a bar in which one man died and two women were taken to the hospital, the owner said she plans to reopen soon.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded just before 3 a.m. to a complaint of gunfire at the Gemini’s Bar & Grill, 23845 U.S. 33. Cordero Williams-El, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two women were taken to Elkhart General Hospital with gunshot wounds.

McBride said the bar was open for regular hours Thursday night, and just before 3 a.m., she heard gunshots.

She said people in the bar heard shooting going back and forward between the victim and the suspect near the entrance. Several patrons, thinking the shooting was taking place inside the bar, ran out.

In the confusion of the events, two women were shot, but their wounds are non life-threatening. Police have not released the names of the two injured.

McBride said it had been a quiet night and that everyone gaining entrance to the bar was patted down, so she did not believe the victim or the suspect were carrying guns with them inside.

“After all the chaos happened, when I got out of the building, that’s when I saw him laying there on the ground and everyone was running around, you had people trying to help apply pressure to the wound.”

McBride said she couldn’t tell where Williams-El was shot. She saw someone pressing a cloth onto Williams-El’s chest area. She said she didn’t see the suspect when she went outside.

She said she has cameras in and outside the building and was able to provide surveillance tapes to police.

“We try to do what we can security-wise. It’s kind of hard to control outside,” she said, but she added she plans to address the issue.

Capt. Jim Bradberry, public information officer with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, said no one has been arrested in the case so far and said he could not comment further due to the ongoing investigation.
