An Elkhart City Council committee is set to discuss the proposed stoplight fundraiser ordinance that includes a ban on sidewalk sign wavers.

The Public Health and Safety Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the council chambers, 229 S. 2nd St.

Council sent the ordinance to the committee last week after objections surfaced over a provision that would ban people from standing on sidewalks waving signs to promote businesses. The form of marketing is popular with some pizza stores and gold stores, but is not regulated in any way by the city.

The main thrust of the ordinance would ban stoplight fundraisers, which are viewed by many as a safety hazard.

The committee will seek public input before deciding whether to send it back to city council with a recommendation for or against. The panel could also send it back to council with no recommendation.
