Elkhart Plastics adding jobs to South Bend HQ

Elkhart Plastics Inc. announced Tuesday that it will invest $3.8 million to add 25,000 square feet to its 83,000-square-foot headquarters. The company also plans to buy new manufacturing equipment for the facility.
Elkhart Plastics molds parts for the agricultural, marine, commercial vehicle and recreational vehicle sectors. The company has 290 employees in Middlebury, Elkhart and South Bend. The new jobs in South Bend will primarily be in production, machine operations, testing and secondary finishing.
“The only limiting factor to our aggressive growth plan right now is people,” company CEO Jack Welter said. “We need to add to our immensely talented workforce so we can deliver the products and services our customers are demanding.”
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. has teamed up with Elkhart Plastics, offering the company as much as $250,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $35,000 in training grants. The company will be able to claim the tax credits once it hires more employees. The city of South Bend is expected to vote whether to give the company an additional property tax abatement.
