ELKHART — Elkhart County residents may bring their household hazardous waste to a collection from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Elkhart County Correctional Facility, 26861 C.R. 26.

Acceptable waste includes oil-based paints, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, medications and household cleaners. Materials are preferred in their original, labeled containers. Containers larger than five gallons will not be accepted.

Items that will not be accepted include electronics, tires, refrigerators and dehumidifiers. For more information about recycling these items, contact the solid waste management district office at 293-2269.

Dry latex paint and alkaline batteries are not considered hazardous and can be added in with regular trashed. To dry latex paint, open the can and let it sit. Adding absorbents such as kitty litter, sand or shredded newspaper will help speed up the process.

The event is sponsored by the solid waste management district of Elkhart County.

The next household hazardous waste collection will be Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.
