GOSHEN — Brett Weddell will become the newest member of the Goshen City Council after winning the vacant seat at a Republican caucus Tuesday night.

Weddell defeated Doug Nisley and joins the council just over a year after a failed bid to win the Goshen District Five seat in the 2011 election.

The seat Weddell will occupy on the council became available when council President Tom Stump resigned following his own victory in the race for a seat on the Elkhart County Council.

Elkhart County GOP Chairman Dale Stickel was encouraged by Weddell’s victory.

“What we’re seeing is young (Republicans) running for office,” Stickel said. “I think that speaks well about the future.”

Weddell will begin his new role effective Jan. 1, when Stump’s term on city council will officially conclude.
