ELKHART — A family lost their home to a fire Sunday night in Cleveland Township, but no one was injured in a fire that took several hours to fully put out.

Cleveland Township Fire Department responded to 30820 Oaksprings Drive, east of West County Line Road around 7 p.m., to find the house in flames. The fire was completely out at about 11:15 p.m. Baugo Township, Osolo Township, Penn Township and Clay Fire Territory fire departments assisted Cleveland Township Fire Department.

Fire Chief Rich Newman said the fire originated from the laundry room and spread to the attic and below the floor of the house. He said the cause was still under investigation, but that it seemed accidental.

Because of the areas where the fire spread, parts of the floor and roof of the house collapsed. The areas affected also made it more difficult for firefighters to maneuver, Newman said.

“The fire got into the crawlspace and up in the attic, it was running above us and below us,” said Newman. “It was kind of hard to get to.”

The family, two adults and three children, had just arrived home when they saw their house on flames and called 911, Newman said.

They received aid from the Elkhart County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Doug Farmwald, emergency services coordinator, said the family is receiving temporary shelter and some financial assistance, primarily to get food, clothes and shoes.

The Red Cross aids families who have lost their home to disaster by providing some financial assistance to replace some of their lost personal items, said Farmwald.
