A single-vehicle crash early Sunday critically injured an Elkhart man.

Steven Briskie, 39, of Elkhart was unconscious and taken to Memorial Hospital of South Bend following an accident at 1:30 a.m. at 29947 C.R. 16, Elkhart, according to Patrolman Don Bader of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Briskie was westbound on C.R. 16 on the west side of Elkhart when his vehicle drifted off the roadway to the north and he overcorrected and hit a tree on the south side of the road, according to the police report.

Police said Briskie was not wearing a seatbelt. He suffered head and facial injuries.

A nursing supervisor said Sunday evening that Briskie is in critical condition.

Police said the accident remains under investigation.

Additions and corrections: The accident happened on the west side of Elkhart, not the southeast side as the initial version indicated.
