ELKHART — The Elkhart Farmers Market has shifted to a three-day winter schedule and is gearing up for a festive December.

Heading into its sixth month of operations in its downtown location, the market is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Tom and Ginny Langley said they were unsure of what to expect when they opened in May, but are now looking to keep the market open year round.

The market has reached a maximum number of vendors for the available space and the Langleys are retooling the store to expand the back of the store at 224 S. Main St.

The store is also being re-arranged to accommodate musical entertainers closer to the front.

Tom Langley said they hope to have the musical stage ready for the Dec. 5 ArtWalk when the market hosts the festival’s interactive community art project.

He said the market has received more interest from entertainers who had been performing at Sweet Creams, a Main Street soda shop that closed earlier this week.

On Dec. 15 the market will host a Christmas party featuring entertainment from the Frailey Family, which includes Adrienne Frailey, a folk singer who often performs in coffee shops and festivals in north-central Indiana.

Some of the new vendors offer items such as a variety of specialized salsas, customized garden benches and jewelry.

The market has two produce vendors and three bakers, according to Langley.

The Langleys need to renew their lease for the building next month, but expressed optimism that they will be able to continue into 2013.

Depending on business, the market might limit business hours to once a week during the winter after the first of the year, they said.

For now, the hours of operations are Thursday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
