GOSHEN — Just one day before she was supposed to have induced labor, a woman gave birth to a baby girl on a trolley Tuesday morning in downtown Goshen.

Skylla Hurt, 22, was riding on the trolley when she started feeling contractions.

“They were coming harder and faster,” said Hurt, who was with her 4-year-old daughter, Bonnie.

Hurt called her doctor, but it was too late. She started give birth in the aisle of the trolley. The driver stopped in front of the Elkhart County Courthouse and called for an ambulance while the other riders tried to help Hurt.

“They were shocked,” Hurt recalled.

Hurt was rushed to IU Health Goshen Hospital with her bundle of joy, Autumn Dawn. Hurt said people stopped by throughout the day to see her new daughter. The baby was born 5 pounds, 3 ounces and 18 inches in length.

“She was in great spirits when I talked to her on the phone, and I could hear the baby in the background,” said Jen Doty, director of the transitional housing program at Individuals and Families in Transition in Elkhart.

Hurt is a client of the transitional housing program for homeless families. She has lived in transitional housing for the past three months.

Hurt spent the night in the hospital with her fiance, Lance Knoop, by her side.

“It’s not like anything that’s ever happened to me,” Hurt said.
