ELKHART — A man who was injured in an explosion at the Yoder Oil Company on Friday afternoon is in critical condition at a hospital burn unit in Fort Wayne.

Elkhart Assistant Fire Chief Shaun Edgerton said Leroy Studey was flown to St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne shortly after the accident at the company in the northwest part of Elkhart. The company was disposing of large tanks, including a diesel tank was being cut up to be scrapped when the explosion occurred just before 3 p.m., according to fire officials at the scene.

Edgerton said he is not sure whether Studey is a Yoder Oil employee or contractor at the company. Phone calls made to Yoder Oil were not returned.
