ELKHART — Memorial High School seniors Paige Newvine and Lexa Magnuson, who helped coach Jacquie Rost’s Crimson Chargers to a sectional title this fall, have made their decisions on where to continue their academic and volleyball careers.

Newvine, 5-foot-8 setter/outside hitter, is headed to the University of Southern Indiana. USI an NCAA Division II program. The Leah Mercer-coached Screaming Eagles head into the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament at 16-15.

Newine was a team MVP, co-captain and team assist leader while starting and earning all-Northern Lakes Conference honors for the second time in 2012.

“Paige is an incredibly athletic setter who is capable of creating kill situations on the court both through her array of sets and her own attack options,” says Memorial coach Jacquie Rost. “She is very competitive in nature and strives to win. What we were most pleased with this year was her development in being a more effective leader on the court. We really put pressure on her to be that go-to player who would instill confidence in her team. Because of this growth, we feel very certain that she will have a great career playing volleyball at the next level.”

Magnuson, a 6-foot-1 middle/opposite side hitter, plans to attend Goshen College. The Jim Routhier-coached Maple Leafs are currently 16-22.

A three-year varsity player and two-year starter, Magnuson led the Chargers in kills and kill efficiency, earned her second all-NLC selection and was the team’s mental attitude award recipient in 2012.

“Lexa is a player who’s just continued to grow every year in her physical ability, court intelligence, and competitiveness,” says Rost. “Her size has definitely contributed in her ability to be effective at the high school level, but it will be her work ethic and commitment to excellence that will enable her to also be successful at the collegiate level. In many game situations this year, she was our go-to attacker who had to terminate the ball for us. This was especially true in our sectional win.”
