INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Labor wants retailers to be sure they’re prepared to deal with Black Friday crowds. “In 2008, a New York state retail worker was killed when a crowd of shoppers rushed through a set of doors at the opening of a Black Friday sales event. ... One reason for the worker’s death was the lack of adequate crowd management measures,” the agency warned. While the death was extreme, “each year a number of workers in the retail industry are injured across the country,” the state agency said.
Training, signs, line markers and emergency preparedness are all important, the agency said.
