ELKHART — Elkhart residents may continue to pile leaves against street curbs as the city’s leaf pickup continues on schedule, according to the Elkhart Street Department.

“I think the leaves came down a bit sooner [this year], but as far as pickup goes, it’s been pretty normal,” said Marty Morgan, who oversees the street department.

As many Elkhart residents are aware, most of the leaves in the city are already down for the season. Four crews are in charge of leaf removal — two with loader trucks and two with leaf vacuums.

This week the crews are picking up leaves in neighborhoods south of the mainline railroad tracks. On Friday they will begin pickup in neighborhoods north of the St. Joseph River and west of Johnson Street. That round of pickup will last through next week.

A third round of leaf removal will take place in neighborhoods north of the St. Joseph River and east of Johnson Street during the week of Nov. 26. Neighborhoods south of the St. Joesph River up to the mainline Norfolk Southern railroad tracks can expect pickup during the week of Dec. 3.

The leaf pickup crews will make a final round of the city in December, weather permitting.
