Memorial diving program got help

Three years ago insurance officials had Elkhart Memorial remove the diving boards from the pool because of what they said was “potential risk of injury,” although no serious injuries had been reported in the school’s existence. The future of springboard diving at EMHS was in jeopardy.

I want to thank the EMHS Athletic Department’s Frank Kurth and Phyllis Tubbs for supporting the diving program and making arrangements with Elkhart Central to allow us to use their facilities and to make sure the student athletes have adequate transportation to Elkhart Central daily for practice and competition.

As diving coach for EMHS it’s important to recognize the efforts of the staff at ECH that have made us feel more at home over the last couple of years and have offered facilities and equipment for us to use. Coach Ryan Bounds, coach Tom Adams and Athletic Director Brian “Buck” Buckley have been inconvenienced with us being there but have been true believers that it’s all about the kids and allowed us full access to their home for our training. This program would not be the same without their support and willingness to share for the benefit of these athletes.

EMHS is still continuing its tradition of strong successful divers in the NLC conference and on the state level. We all hope to have a new pool soon with acceptable diving facilities at EMHS. Until then, thanks again to all who understand and support the best interest of young student athletes.

There are a lot of good people out there at both schools and I am proud to be associated with all of them. I wanted to share this so our community understands the extra effort put forth under special circumstances by these two schools to work together.
