ELKHART — A 23-month-old child was taken to the hospital and into protective custody by the Indiana Department of Child Services after police found various precursors of manufacturing methamphetamine at the child's residence Sunday night.

Christopher Sawyer, 24, and Lauren Semmerling, 21, were booked at the Elkhart County Jail for manufacturing meth, possession of precursors to manufacture meth, possession of meth, possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance. Sawyer was also arrested for neglect of a dependent.

According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department responded to the 23000 block of Sunnyside Avenue around 9:30 p.m. to serve a warrant for leaving the scene of a crash. Police had already received a tip that there may have been meth being manufactured in the residence.

Upon arrival police found several items that looked like meth precursors, and they obtained a search warrant. Through the warrant they found numerous coffee filters containing a blue granular substance, numerous clear plastic pen tubes with white residue, packages of medicine that contain pseudoephedrine, hypodermic needles, items containing sulfuric acid, among others. Some of these items were found on the floor and window of Sawyer's room. Police also found that Sawyer and Semmerling had purchased pseudoephedrine for a total of 35 times.

The 23-month-old was taken to the hospital as a standard procedure when police find meth precursors in a residence. Two other people were living in the house, but they were told they could not stay while the house was contaminated.

Sawyer and Semmerling are being held on a $150,000 bond. Formal charges have not been filed, and expected to be filed Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
