UNION, Mich. — A dog named Lucky is living up to his name.

A poodle mix looking for a home after his owner died of a rare condition may be adopted this week. Lucky was the pet of Pauline Burema, a woman from Cassopolis who was the first person in Indiana to die from fungal meningitis. Burema, who passed away in October, developed the infection after receiving tainted back pain medications in Elkhart.

Lucky was Burema’s long-time companion who stayed faithfully by her side until she was admitted into the hospital. The dog has been living at Burema’s grandson’s home in Union, but the family can no longer take care of him. The family has received more than 20 inquiries about Lucky from all corners of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

“It’s been amazing, the responses we’ve gotten about Lucky,” said Carol Snyder, Burema’s daughter who lives in New Mexico.

Snyder said the family is close to making a decision about Lucky’s new home. Lucky will spend a couple of days with a potential adopter this week to see if he is a good fit, Snyder added.

Snyder said Lucky needs a bath and a haircut before he is adopted. If a local business would like to donate a grooming session, email Snyder at carolfoundit@hotmail.com.
