ELKHART — The driver who killed a 60-year-old Elkhart man in June pleaded guilty to his charge this morning, Nov. 12, at Superior Court 2.

Kevin Meyer, 19, of Elkhart, entered a plea of guilty to failure to stop after an accident that resulted in someone’s death, a Class C felony.

Meyer was driving to work in the early morning of June 7 when he struck Raymundo Sabag, who was riding his bicycle at the time. According to the probable cause affidavit, Meyer told police he was driving a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville south on C.R. 17 when he saw Sabag riding in the same direction as him, on the shoulder of the road. Meyer said there was a car to his left, and he could not avoid hitting Sabag. He said he panicked and continued driving, without stopping or returning to the scene. He was arrested Aug. 14 after a police investigation. Police determined the bicycle was struck on a paved shoulder of C.R. 17.

During the plea hearing, Meyer was present with his family. He posted a bond for $10,000 the same day he was arrested.

Meyer could face up to four years in prison for the charge. Judge Stephen Bowers scheduled Meyer’s sentencing hearing for Jan. 7.
