Ten Penn High School students who competed in the Indiana Academic Spell Bowl this weekend took home their 12th state championship title in 14 years.

The students competed at Purdue University against 30 schools from around the state, pared down from 190 teams three weeks ago. Penn’s team tied with Martinsville High School in its class with a perfect score of 90. Both teams came in first place overall.

Three Penn seniors — Leah Hershberger, Austin Heckaman and Jenny Huang — broke an unofficial state record with the most words spelled correctly in their careers. Hershberger has correctly spelled 305 words while Heckaman and Huang had 306 each. The record was previously held by Penn student Christy Chang, who had spelled 297 words correctly before she graduated in 2011.
