GOSHEN — More than half of Elkhart County’s registered voters went to the polls Tuesday, according to Elkhart County Clerk Wendy Hudson.

Hudson said 54.87 percent of the county’s registered voters turned out for the election.

Hudson said she expected that number to be nearer to 60 percent, in part because of the amount of discussion in the community about the races and because in the 2008 general election 62.7 percent of Elkhart County’s registered voters turned out.

“I heard from most of the poll workers that they had a busy, but good day,” she said.

Absentee voting was also very heavy, she noted.

The day went well, though there were a few mechanical glitches that were quickly fixed, Hudson said. Most of the day’s issues resulted from voters being confused about where they were supposed to vote. Hudson said that all registered voters should have received a letter telling them their polling place prior to the primary election.
