The votes are nearly counted in Elkhart County, but election officials are having to recount hundreds of ballots due to a memory card failure.

Memory cards in the Accu-Vote machines occasionally fail, according to Chad Leiby, a representative of the company who is also a businessman in Elkhart County. He said it happens once every couple of elections due to the card being bumped or a battery failing.

The voting machine at First Baptist Church, 1011 S. Indiana Ave., Goshen, for precincts Elkhart 9 and Elkhart 10 didn’t indicate a problem during voting today, said Wayne Kramer, Republican member of the Elkhart County Election Board.

But the card didn’t let them load the results into a computer, so Kramer and Mike Leasor, the Democrat member of the election board, are feeding in ballots into a machine onto another card.

Leiby said there are probably 500 to 1,500 ballots and that final results are likely tonight around 9:45 p.m.
