NAPPANEE — A 5K run and walk Saturday will benefit the children of an injured Nappanee farmer.

David Borkholder, a Nappanee dairy farmer, was severely injured on July 4 while operating a haybine on his property. He remains in a coma at Elkhart General Hospital.

To help the five young Borkholder children in the aftermath of their father’s accident, friends and family have organized a 5-kilometer race to raise funds. The run will be at the Borkholder Dutch Village center. Proceeds from the run will be used to purchase mattresses, shoes, winter clothes and other goods for the children.

“The reason we’re having the event is to support the Borkholder children,” said Floyd Borkholder, David’s brother. “It’s a good cause but it will also just be a fun walk/run event.”

Registration for the 5-kilometer run will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, and the race will begin at 9. Water stops will be present throughout the flat race course. A 3K option will also be available.

The event will not be timed or offer prices to winners, but each participant will receive a commemorative coffee mug for their contribution. Door prices and refreshments will be available after the race.

Entry forms received by Nov. 7 cost $20. All entries after Nov. 7 will be $25, including entries made on the race day.

Local businesses and individuals are encouraged to sponsor employees or other runners, make monetary contributions and of course participate in the 5K.

To receive an entry form or for more information, email cavermark@hotmail.com.
