Northridge High School students raise money with pie auction

MIDDLEBURY — Northridge High School family and consumer science classes raised $475 for the Middlebury Food Bank by auctioning off 14 pies to community members at the Middlebury Fall Festival.

The classes were under the guidance of Sheri Woodruff. James Smith was the volunteer auctioneer.

The pies were also judged.

Cheryl Baker won first place in the adult division with her old-fashioned cream pie. Doris Rudloff was the runner-up with an apple crumb pie.

Nick Thompson, Kelly Rink and Brittany Jones won first place in the student pecan pie division.

Ben Miller, Nolan Bowman, Collin Utley and Arick Doberenz won first place in the student peach pie division.

Kelsey Graber, Lexi Baylis, James Dickerson, Sarah Smith and Grace Gravengood won first place in the student blueberry pie division.

Maddy Lee, Rachel Bontrager, Brittany Ordway and Brooke Ritchie won first place for the student apple pie division.



The recipe for Cheryl Baker’s winning pie is below:

Old Fashioned Cream Pie

3/4 cup white sugar

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 Tbsp flour

1 tsp vanilla

2 eggs, separated

pinch of salt

2 Tbsp butter, melted

2 cups half & half



Mix ingredients together except egg whites. Beat eggs whites and add to mixture. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 400 degrees for ten minutes, reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees and bake until done.



Pie Crust

2 cups flour

1 tsp salt

1 tsp sugar

3/4 cup shortening

1 tsp vinegar

1 egg, slightly beaten

3-5 Tbsp water



Sift flour, salt and sugar together. Add shortening and mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add vinegar and egg and mix. Add water 1 Tbsp at a time until ingredients hold together. Roll out on floured board.

Yields two crusts.
