Police responded to three different cases of meth trash throughout Elkhart County in the last two weeks.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the 19000 block of C.R. 121, where a suspicious vehicle was found abandoned in a wooded area around 11 p.m. on Oct. 17.

Upon investigation, police found precursors, including a fuel bottle, cold medicine and bottles with suspicious substances.

On Wednesday around 6:10 p.m., a man called police to the area of C.R. 2 east of C.R. 13 in Middlebury, reporting he had found meth trash.

That same evening, Elkhart police were called to the area of the 1800 block of Rainbow Bend Boulevard in reference to possible meth trash located around 7:40 p.m. Some residents in that area told police they had pulled a garbage bag that had floated over to their pier.

They found the bag contained meth trash, and it was collected.

The Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Section had been notified of the three incidents for cleanup and further investigation.

Elkhart ranked second in the number of meth labs seized last year. According to the Indiana State Police, 71 meth labs were seized in Elkhart County.

The definition of meth lab has changed over the last few years, as meth manufacturers find new ways to produce the drug. Some manufacturers will use bottles to mix the ingredients, and they later throw the bottles away.

Residents can call the Indiana State Police Meth hotline at 800-453-4756 to report a meth lab or meth trash.
