The Class 3A No. 1-ranked Jimmies (9-0, 6-0) racked up seven quarterback sacks for 40 yards in losses — six sacks coming in the first half — on the way to a 49-14 regular season-ending Northern State Conference victory against Triton.
“We were able to get some pressure,” said Jimtown coach Mike Campbell, who saw Casey Adams, John Hurtt and Keoin Johnson record two sacks each and Devan Emerson one. “When (Triton) spread out, I think we confused them a couple times. We had more guys rushing than they had protection for.”
Emerson not only had the sack from his defensive end position, but he ran for four touchdowns as a tailback — 12 yards in the first quarter, 40 and 4 yards in the second quarter and 57 yards in the third quarter.
“We practice a lot on rushing (the quarterback),” said Emerson.
As for his four-TD night with 119 rushing yards on just six carries, Emerson said “I couldn’t have done it without my line.”
Adams and Johnson put Jimtown on the scoreboard first when they tackled running back D.J. Riffle in the end zone for a safety.
The Jimmies’ other touchdowns were tallied by Tanner Adams (a 10-yard run in the first quarter), Evan Oblinger (a 38-yard pass from Brody Olson in the first quarter) and Shawn Garrriott (a 1-yard run in the third quarter).
The Adams TD came after Hurtt pounced on one of Triton’s five fumbles.
Trey Zufan booted five extra points for Jimtown.
Triton (2-7, 1-6) became the first team to score more than 12 points against a Jimtown team that has posted five shutouts.
The first Triton touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from Bryson Mosier to Cody Shively at the end of the second quarter.
The other Trojan score came in the final minute of the game against the Jimmies’ reserves.
It was the final regular-season game for both teams. Fort Wayne Concordia travels to Jimtown and Triton goes to Adams Central next Friday in the first round of sectional play.
It was the Jimmies’ fourth unbeaten regular season since 2000 and first since 2007.
