Teen suffers critical injuries car-bike crash west of Elkhart Friday

ELKHART — The 17-year-old bicyclist struck by a car on C.R. 16 Friday evening suffered critical internal injuries.

Darrien Lewis of South Bend was riding a bicycle, off of the south side of the roadway, east on C.R. 16 east of Highland Court around 6:15 p.m. Friday when the crash happened, according to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

Lewis came onto the roadway and into the path of an eastbound car, driven by 19-year-old Aaron Hardesty of Elkhart, according to police. The car struck the bicycle from behind, then left the north side of the roadway and struck a mailbox and an electrical pole.

Lewis suffered internal injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Hardesty reported pain to his left collar bone.

No enforcement actions have been taken, and the crash remains under investigation.
