GOSHEN — Speed plus ball-control equalled a 3-0 Class 2A girls soccer regional semifinal victory for South Bend St. Joseph against Concord Thursday at Goshen High School.

In the other match, Penn poured on the shots but Warsaw goalkeeper Abby Schue turned all but one of them away as the Tigers edged the Kingsmen 2-1.

The regional final — St. Joseph vs. Warsaw — is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.

SB St. Joseph 3, Concord 0

“Their front six is exceptionally fast,” said Concord coach Todd Hesselbart after watching the No. 4-ranked Indians rack up 12 shots on goal and eight corner kicks while holding the Minutemen to six shots and two corners.

Concord, the Goshen Sectional champion, had its best scoring chances when Jen Reyes booted a shot off the crossbar in the first half and Kristin Brumbaugh got behind St. Joe goalkeeper Catherine Edmonds twice in the second 40-minute session. The second try was stopped just before the goal line by Indian defender Morgan Scott.

“With a team like that, when you have a chance to finish, you have to finish,” said Hesselbart. “That’s just a very talented team. We played pretty well, given who we were up against.”

St. Joe (18-2) got goals from Samantha Kambol in the 5th minute, Amanda Hastings in the 62nd and Catherine Raster in 77th.

“They just moved well off the ball,” said Hesselbart. “Their best defense was being able to move the ball and possess it.”

Concord’s only losses of the 2012 season came against Northridge (2-0 in the regular season, a setback avenged in the sectional final) and Tuesday against St. Joe, coached by Johan Kuitse. The Minutemen had 11 shutouts.

“I’m proud of my girls, proud of what we accomplished this year,” said Hesselbart. “I don’t know how many people looked at us and said we were going to be 15-2-2.”

Concord will lose six players to graduation — Reyes, Morgan Books, Sarah Emerson, Jackie Greenawalt, Raquel Rich and Amanda Schoeffler.

Warsaw 2, Penn 1

The Tigers (13-4-2) scored 17 seconds into the match on a well-placed pass by Gabby Monroy and finish by Meredith Hollar and got another goal 1:38 into the second half on a deke and shot by Monroy while ending the season of the Kingsmen (11-5-4).

Penn had 19 shots on goal — 15 more than Warsaw — and forced Schue to make many acrobatic saves, especially in the second half.

“That was a tough game,” said first-year Kingsmen coach Jeff Hart. “We just couldn’t get that last goal.”

Penn’s goal came in the 54th minute when Diana Diaz-Diurych pounced on a rebound and put it in the net.

With Penn as the late aggressor, Warsaw held off the charge with its defensive alignment.

“We had a lot of numbers back and stayed compact,” said Tigers coach Dan Miller. “We were communicating to keep our marks.”
