ELKHART — The Fall Flower Carpet was on display from Sept. 19 until Saturday, decorating downtown Elkhart and raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County. Thousands of pots of mums decorated Waterfall Drive between High and Franklin Streets and organizers say that the public enjoyed the downtown quilt garden.

Diana Lawson, executive director of the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that her group will meet in the next few weeks to decide if they want to have another Fall Flower Carpet and what changes should be made.

“For the first year we were really happy with the number of visitors who came,” Lawson said.

She said that there has already been some discussion about having it on High Street where it might be more visible. But that’s still yet to be determined. She said they would need the City of Elkhart to help with the project as far as closing the street, setting up the flowers and taking them down.

“It seems to be pretty popular idea that it might be on High Street because of that kind of natural elevation that High Street has,” she said.

Proceeds from the sale of the mums went to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County, which raised more than $3,500. BBBS executive director Stephanie Patka said the event also helped them reach out to people who are interested in volunteering with the organization. She said they were able to sell the majority of the 7,000 mums that were part of the carpet.

“All the mums have homes now,” Patka said.
