There may be a televised debate between the two main party 2nd District U.S. House hopefuls after all.

Democratic candidate Brendan Mullen said Thursday that he has agreed to take part in a proposed debate put on by WSBT Radio, an encounter that would be televised on SBT2.

Mullen had initially expressed reluctance about participating in the WSBT debate while Republican hopeful Jackie Walorski turned down an invitation to take part in a debate to be televised by WNIT, the public television station. That had thrown the likelihood of a televised debate involving the Democrat and Republican into doubt.

Ultimately, though, Mullen decided to take part in the WSBT event “because we believe the voters deserve multiple opportunities to hear Jackie and Brendan speak,” said Andy Reynolds, the Democrat’s campaign manager.

Reynolds went on, saying he hoped Walorski would decide to participate in two other debates that she has thus far declined to take part in — the WNIT debate, co-sponsored by Indiana University South Bend, and another sponsored by the Rochester Sentinel newspaper.

In all, four debates have been proposed in the 2nd District race — the WSBT, WNIT and Rochester Sentinel encounters and another sponsored by the Wabash Chamber of Commerce.

Walorski has agreed to take part in the WSBT and Wabash plans while Mullen has now agreed to take part in all four.

“I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to talk to voters all over the district, anyone who’s interested in talking with me about the challenges we face, I’ll sit down with,” Mullen said in a press release.

Libertarian candidate Joe Ruiz has agreed to take part in the WNIT, Rochester Sentinel and Wabash debates but wasn’t invited to take part in the WSBT plans.
