ELKHART — Officials confirmed in a press release that the homeowner at 1919 Frances Ave. shot two individuals during a apparent attempted burglary at the residence Oct. 3.

Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. this morning, Oct. 9 at the office of the Prosecuting Attorney, 301 S. Main St.

According to a press release from the Elkhart Police Department, the homeowner called 911 around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and told dispatchers that someone had forced entry into his residence and that shots were fired. Police found two wounded people inside the residence.

Danzele Johnson, 21, of Goshen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two 16-year-olds, Blake Layman and Jose Quiroz, were arrested on a preliminary charge of murder.

Angie Johnson, Layman’s mother, said her son was shot in the leg at 1919 Frances Ave. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released to police.

Layman and Quiroz are being held at the Elkhart County Jail without a bond after officials found probable cause during a hearing.
