GOSHEN — The Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety voted Monday to acquire land from Goshen Community Schools to build a path along Monroe Street that will stretch from U.S. 33 to the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds.

Once open, the path, known as the Monroe Street Trail, will be open to walkers and bicyclists and will run along the north side of Monroe Street from the intersection with U.S. 33 to Gate 5 at the fairgrounds.

The board agreed to pay the Goshen Community Schools Building Corporation the appraised value of $40,325.

As part of the agreement, the board also agreed to pay Goshen Community Schools a total of $23,000 as compensation for having to relocate a private water meter and fencing from the property.

Eighty percent of the project will be federally funded. Since it is a federally funded project, a state-certified firm is required to inspect and administer the construction.

As a result, the board approved a contract with Wightman Petrie, Inc. for the construction inspection and administration of the trail. The contract is for $84,455.91 on a time and materials basis, which is approximately 8 percent of the construction costs.

Other business at Monday’s meeting included:

• The board awarded the bid for the downtown vault assessment and closure plan to Yaw Construction for a total of $52,000.

• The board approved closure of Monroe Street for the Goshen High School music department’s second annual Miles for Music 5K Fun Run and 3K Walk. The race will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Nov. 10.

• The board announced the wastewater utility will hold an open house at the Wet Weather Detention Facility, 705 N. Indiana Ave., from 1 to 6 p.m. on Friday.

Tours will be offered and the flush gates will be operated every half hour to allow those interested to see how the automated tank cleaning system works.
