Michael Edwards, 44, of Goshen, was flown to a South Bend hospital after police found him lying behind his residence on the 1300 block of Clinton St. around 6:12 p.m. Friday
Edwards told police he was standing in his yard when he was approached by a young man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He believes the suspect was attempting to commit robbery when he was shot.
Witnesses said they knew Edwards as Mike, and that he mostly kept to himself.
David Snyder, who lives near the neighborhood, said he was riding his bike back home from work when he heard gun shots.
“It was mostly disbelief when I first heard them,” he said. “The victim called out to me, he said he had been shot.”
Snyder said he saw Edwards kneeling yelling for help. He called 911 and waited with Edwards, talking to him to keep him conscious until police and medics arrived. While they talked Snyder recalls Edwards told him he did not not the person who had shot him.
Snyder said he saw a man with a hoodie and darker clothes, but he was unable to see his face. He believes the suspect ran south on Riverside from the scene.
For Snyder, that area in town has seemed safe to him. He usually commutes on his bike, and thought of Clinton Street as a quiet part of the neighborhood.
“It’s completely shocking to me. It’s hard to believe anything like that would happen.,” he said. “I see kids playing out at times or other people on their bikes.”
