The Irish got off to a shaky start when Hurricanes receiver Phillip Dorsett slipped behind the Notre Dame secondary twice for what would have been sure touchdowns, but dropped both passes.
After that opening series, Notre Dame took over and maintained control of the game throughout the first half.
Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson violated team rules earlier in the week and didn’t start, but he subbed in for replacement Tommy Rees after three downs and led the Irish on a touchdown drive.
Theo Riddick capped the 88-yard drive with a 1-yard run into the end zone.
Golson was flawless throughout the first quarter, throwing a perfect 6 for 6 for 76 yards and rushing for 45 yards on four carries.
Miami responded with a 28-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
Kicker Kyle Brindza nailed a pair of field goals at 22 and 32 yards in the second quarter to boost the Notre Dame lead at the half.
Brindza missed from 34 yards as time expired in the half.
Golson is 15 for 20 for 153 yards and carried the ball six times for 51 yards at the half. T.J. Jones leads receivers with four catches for 45 yards.
