ELKHART — The two 16-year-olds who were arrested Wednesday in connection with the burglary attempt at 1919 Frances Ave. will stay in jail without bond after a probable cause hearing Friday.

Ed Windbigler, chief investigator for the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office, said the probable cause affidavit has been sealed for purposes of the investigation, but a magistrate found probable cause during a hearing for the two juveniles.

Blake Layman of 1611 Frances Ave. and Jose Quiroz of 1922 Frances Ave. were arrested at and near the scene Wednesday. According to a press release from the Elkhart Police Department, the homeowner called 911 around 2:30 p.m. and told dispatchers that someone had forced entry into his residence and that shots were fired. Police found two wounded people inside the residence.

Danzele Johnson, 21, of Goshen, was pronounced dead at the residence.

Layman and Quiroz were each arrested on a preliminary murder charge.

Angie Johnson, Layman’s mother, said her son was shot in the leg at 1919 Frances Ave. He was taken to Elkhart General Hospital, where he was treated and released to police.

The homeowner told police that there were two other people who ran from the scene. After a short chase, police arrested one suspect.

The magistrate scheduled an initial hearing for both juveniles Oct. 11.

The Elkhart Truth/eTruth.com does not usually name juveniles charged with a crime, but is doing so in this instance because of the possible murder charge. If Layman and Quiroz are charged with murder, they would be tried as adults.
