A man who was arrested following a police chase Tuesday evening has been identified as Bobby Johnson.

Johnson, 25, of 52081 Conrad St., was taken to the Elkhart County Jail for criminal recklessness, leaving the scene of an accident and carjacking, according to a booking report from the jail.

According to witnesses, Johnson was at the VFW Post 88 on 1519 W. Bristol St. for about an hour and claimed to be the vice-president of the Dirty White Boys Gang.

George Morehouse, one of the witnesses, said he saw Hal Spratt trying to pull Johnson out of a van. Johnson reversed and pulled forward, striking Spratt at least twice.

Lt. Laura Koch, public information officer at the Elkhart Police Department, said police were called around 5:17 p.m. Johnson fled in the vehicle and later on foot. He was caught around 5:48 p.m.

Johnson has a long criminal history involving possession of narcotics, theft and identity deception according to Elkhart County Jail records. Koch said Johnson was not registered as a gang member.

Spratt was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.
